Is Philly BAD For Your Health?

Todays piece is a simple matter of my opinion. I was watching the NBC evening news and found out that Philadelphia has earned the title of being the second fattest city in the U.S.A. Wow, really? We’re that FAT? Being one of the creators of PhillyHealthWatch, I am deeply disturbed by this. And, as I write this, in the background on the Today Show they are discussing the statistics of eating out at restaurants and its direct relation to obesity. What in the world happened to our self-control?

Yes, we do have some of the tastiest food in the world. Our cultural diversity is what makes this cities heart beat. The food here is a direct reflection of the many nationalities that grace this town. The hogies, pretzels, water ice, bread, sushi, Steven Starr restaurants, pizza, new BYOBs, and old 5 star favorites keep Philly at the top of the coveted FOOD chain.  I’m hungry just thinking about it. But, at the same time I’m faced with the two words that have always guided me in my health and fitness endeavors. These 2 words are balance and moderation! We can have it all in Philly, we just don’t have to eat it all. Taste everything but always take responsibility for your calorie management. Take ownership of yourself!

Along with all of the fantastic foods Philly has to eat, we also have a huge variety of awesome gyms, spas, fitness boutiques, yoga studios, spin classes, martial arts schools and a whole lot more. These places put out some of the best products in the country. Its true, just as our food has marked its place in the world so too has our health and fitness market. Places like Sweat, Balance Studios, dhyana-yoga, Fusion cross training, Lux Spa and Fitness, The Lithe Method, and Body cycle studio are just to name a few of the greats. All of these places are dedicated to excellence and each one takes pride in the fact that their home is in Philadelphia.

We are the home of Rocky and The Broad Street Bullies. Every Philadelphian already has the biggest fitness component built-in to their genetic make up. Of course, I’m talking about toughness. In order to be fit you gotta be tough. And, I think we already have that part covered. So, go out and indulge in your favorite dish and be proud to call yourself a Philadelphian. BUT, shortly after, get yourself to one of the super fit places in your area. No reason why you can’t bring an awesome lean body to your favorite restaurant. Always remember gang, In order to be the person you want to be you gotta live it now!

I know many of the people who work at or go to these great fitness and wellness establishments. If you have any questions about any of these places please feel free to email me at Tips@phillyhealthwatch.com.
